Surgical Masks

Surgical masks are designed to cover the wearer’s nose and mouth. They help to prevent the transmission of germs and respiratory droplets.  For example, those produced by coughing, sneezing or unintentionally spitting.  They are also known as medical face masks, procedure masks or spit masks.

Surgical Masks – Type I, II and IIR

Medical face masks are classified into two types: Type I and Type II according to their Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE). The BFE determines the amount of infective agent retained by the face mask.  This directly relates to the amount of bacteria released through the mask and into the environment.  The Type II masks are further divided according to Splash Resistance Pressure which determines their resistance to potentially contaminated fluid splashes. Type IIR masks not only limit the transmission of infection from the individuals wearing them, they also provide protection from liquid droplets.

• A Type II mask is not splash resistant.
• A Type II R mask is splash resistant, the letter ‘R’ signifies splash resistance.
